What We Do
Our first, goal, as best we can, is to reduce current taxes. Our second goal is to lay the groundwork to minimize taxes in future years, especially during retirement. Sometimes this actually means accelerating future taxable income. Here are some examples:
Tax Projections
A tax projection is a major tool we use. Based on the last few years’ actual tax picture, we project the current and sometimes future years’ taxes. We are looking at current tax brackets as well as future tax brackets. Since we know your current situation and future plans, we factor in portfolio income, projected earnings, retirement dates, pensions, Social Security decisions, and more.
Cost Basis
While monitoring your investments, we keep track of your cost basis. Sometimes we take advantage of capital losses by tax-loss harvesting. This reduces the current year’s taxes and usually future year’s taxes, as well. Other times we are looking to minimize the impact of capital gains.
Portfolio Structure
We are careful to hold assets in the most appropriate accounts. While designing your portfolio, we strategically position assets across taxable, tax-deferred and tax-free accounts – depending upon where we might get the best after-tax results. We utilize ETFs to avoid unwanted capital gain distributions.
CPA Referrals
We work with a number of experienced CPAs in the Valley and can provide referrals upon request.
Why We Do It
Often, accountants are reactive: preparing the tax return after the prior year is done. We are proactive: We look for tax-saving opportunities during the year or years in advance. We lay the groundwork to minimize taxes in future years. Minimizing taxes helps build wealth over time.
What We Don’t Do
We are not tax professionals and do not prepare tax returns. However, we often consult with your accountant when contemplating major tax-saving possibilities.
